The living garments

Recently, I found three cool things I just HAD to write about. And they all had one thing in common: they are kind of living a life.
I present you, ‘The living garments’.
Self-tying shoe Nike
Nike developed a shoe which ties its own shoelaces. Nike already developed shoes called ‘Nike mag’ for the film classic ‘Back to the future II’, but they were only available at some auctions. However, the time has come now and we’ll be able to wear this new invention. How awesome? Now I can hear you thinking ‘How can my shoe tie its own shoelaces?’. Well, I’ll explain to you. When you'll put on your shoe, a build in sensor will track that, and will react by pulling the shoelaces together. Sounds easy, right? These shoes are now called ‘HyperAdapt shoes’. They will be produced in three colours, and will provisionally only be available at the fitnessplatform Nike+. There is no price indication at the moment, but I don't expect them to be so wallet-friendly.

Clothing that changes by the way you feel
Fashion designer Ying Gao created two dresses, where robotic movement and facial recognation software was installed. These dresses are actually living and breathing, how cool? Because of the software that tracks your body, the dresses move slowly. And if you show some emotion, they will freeze. The dresses are made with organza, cotton mesh, PVDF and elektronic devices. The price of these dresses are not known yet, but I believe they won’t cost like 10 euros.

Clothing that changes through the weather
The French (now living in the Netherlands) student Surya David White, has come up with a serie of clothing called ‘Weatherness’. She has developed clothing which changes it’s color when it gets in touch with rain, for example a raincoat. She also made some scaffolding banners which change their patterns when there is a gust of wind. And at least, she made a curtain which changes it’s color when the temperature changes. All because she wanted to let people enjoy the weather instead of nagging about it.

I was really enthusiastic about these three new things. As I said before, they are all kind of living a life. These three ‘products’ are all breathing, changing or doing something themselves. They aren’t regular garments anymore, because they live. I think this fits into the trend Shifting Identities because people are so busy making things like this to stand out, and give garments more stories. I think they all fit together in a new trend called: ‘The living garments’. I think it’s a good thing we are able these days to make things like this. We have the technology and knowledge to do it and I think we can be very proud of that!
